Fountain of Youth, Niland

Exhibition

The Niland Geyser first appeared in 1953 as a typical stationary mudpot five miles northwest of Niland, California. A sort of acidic hot spring, or fumarole. Dubbed the “Slow One” it began to move westward in 2007, a metal barrier was put in to place to stop it but the hot, sulphuric water continued underneath this and took out the Union Pacific railroad tracks. It is now working its way to disrupt the fibreoptics cable, a petroleum pipeline and highway 111. The ‘Fountain Of Youth’ resort spa lies close to Niland and the Geyser where this photo was taken. This photo is an alternative window on the tensions that surround border generations in the USA. Similar to the Geyser, the political tension and unrest feels like it is an unstoppable, glacial pace flow of stinky mud that on its journey continues to break up any practical structure in its path. Edition of one hundred. Signed by artist.
