Big wave surfer Andrew Cotton is a stoic athlete who after breaking his back at the behemoth point at Nazaré, Portugal returned to once again ride the huge winter swell that the Atlantic creates here. This portrait was captured on the anniversary of his injury. A day after he had given a keynote talk at WebSummit Lisbon, a chance to capture him amongst the boatyard where the riders congregate, gear up and head out on jet skis to be towed into these ocean monsters. I chose a nearby boat to draw a parallel between the big wave surfer and traditional seafarers. A theme of hardship and resilience in the face of adversity.
